The legendary Rajasthani queens are some of the most powerful women in Indian subcontinent who put their kingdom on the travel map. Rajasthan, a state that saw numerous wars, sacrifices and martyrdoms in the 16th century.

One such woman was Mira Bai, the queen of Rajasthan who is known more for her devotion than her political position. Mira Bai's spiritual anthems rejected the patriarchy. Born in the late fifteenth century, Mira was a princess of Merta, a small kingdom in what is now Rajasthan. Mirabai was persecuted in various ways by her relatives after her husband died in battle and she became a widow. Mira soon left for Vrindavan, the destination for widows. She led the life of a hermit, writing poems, engaging in religious discourse and interacting with devotees. Her popularity as a singer and preacher peaked.

Her life has immense relevance today because her courageous story can find parallels in the lives of contemporary women who still have to fight opposition from families and society to live an independent and creative public life. Even today, we put a lot of pressure on single women to marry and devote their lives to domestic duties.
